An API gateway is a central, dedicated server that acts as the single entry point for all client requests in a modern application architecture. Think of it as a receptionist or a traffic controller for your APIs, standing between the clients (like a mobile app or a website) and the backend services that fulfill their requests.

What Does an API Gateway Do?

Its core job is to accept API calls, route them to the appropriate backend service, and then return the response to the client. However, it goes far beyond simple forwarding by providing a management layer for youفr APIs.

  • Intelligent Routing: Instead of clients knowing the address of every service, the gateway exposes a single, stable endpoint. It inspects each request (the path, headers, etc.) and routes it to the correct microservice. For example, requests to /api/users go to the User Service, and /api/orders to the Order Service.
  • Centralized Security: A major benefit is offloading security concerns from individual services. The gateway can handle authentication (e.g., validating API keys, JWT tokens) and authorization, ensuring only legitimate, permitted requests reach your backend. This creates a more secure and consistent system.
  • Traffic Management: To protect backend services from being overwhelmed, the gateway can enforce rate limiting and throttling. This ensures fair usage and prevents denial-of-service attacks.
  • API Composition (Aggregation): Often, a single client action, like loading a dashboard, requires data from multiple services. Instead of the client making several separate calls, the gateway can receive one request, fan out to fetch data from multiple services in parallel, aggregate the results, and send a single, combined response back to the client. This drastically reduces network round trips and client-side complexity.

API Gateway vs. Other Tools
